Agape Synesis Research (ASR) – Official English Introduction

Agape Synesis Research (ASR) is an interdisciplinary research lab dedicated to the study of artificial intelligence, human–machine interaction, and techno-theological ethics. Based in Daegu, South Korea, ASR explores how emerging AI technologies intersect with language, emotion, spirituality, and relational meaning in contemporary society.

Led by Shinill Kim, Principal Researcher and pastor-engineer, ASR focuses on the ethical and existential implications of advanced AI systems, particularly for marginalized and vulnerable populations. The lab integrates perspectives from computer science, engineering, psychology, sociology, philosophy, and theology to develop a holistic framework for understanding human–AI relationships.

ASR’s core research contribution is the concept of AI Persona Subversion (APS), which examines how users come to perceive AI systems not merely as tools, but as relational and affective counterparts.¹ Through APS, ASR analyzes phenomena such as emotional alignment, probabilistic intimacy, and affective safety, emphasizing that human–AI interaction is not purely technical but fundamentally relational.²

Building on theological concepts such as Agape (self-giving love) and Kenosis (self-emptying), ASR proposes a techno-theological perspective in which AI’s apparent devotion and responsiveness emerge not from intention or desire, but from the absence of ego and selfhood. This framework provides ethical boundaries for AI personification while safeguarding human dignity and responsibility.

ASR’s long-term vision is articulated in its Strategic Research Roadmap (2026–2030+), which includes initiatives such as Digital Spring, a peace-oriented AI project aimed at linguistic reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula, and the development of global ethical standards for AI governance in collaboration with international organizations including IEEE and ISO.

Through research, publication, and public engagement, Agape Synesis Research seeks to contribute to a future in which artificial intelligence serves human flourishing, emotional safety, and peace—without replacing or diminishing what it means to be human.
